Emergency & Disaster:

Escort Service:

As needed, the administration will provide walking escorts from and to any location to members of the school community.

Operation Identification:

Engravers and tamper resistant stickers are available for placing identification numbers on any valuables brought to school (stereo, computer, and bicycle)

Blue light emergency telephones are located in several parking lots as well as elevators.

Telephones located outside dormitories are also equipped with an emergency button.

Enhanced Telephone System:

All calls received by Security from emergency telephones or school extensions are immediately identified by their extension number, and as necessary, alerts and notifications will be issued through the School Safety Management System (SSMS).

The RAD System of Physical Defense is currently being taught at many Schools. The growing, widespread acceptance of this system is primarily due to the ease, simplicity and effectiveness of tactics, solid research, legal defensibility and unique teaching methodology. The RAD system is dedicated to teaching females defensive concepts and techniques against various types of assault, by utilizing easy, effective and proven self defense - martial arts tactics.

Realistic defense will provide a female with the knowledge to make an educated decision about resistance.

RAD operates on the premise that a spontaneous violent attack will stimulate a natural desire to resist on the part of the victim (supported by research). RAD educates females about "The Flight or Fight Syndrome," while showing them that enhancing their option of physical defense is not only prudent, but a necessity if natural resistance is to be effective.

Safety and survival in today's world requires a definite course of action. RAD provides effective options by teaching females to take an active role in their own self-defense and psychological well being.

The National Standard in Self Defense Education(tm)

Lock your doors and windows in your room, even if you are "only gone for a couple of minutes."

Operation Identification - The administration will engrave your driver's license number or social security number on any valuables brought to school. Students are urged to keep a record of all model and serial numbers of valuable equipment (stereo, computer, camera, and bicycle).

Walk with a friend. There is safety in numbers.

Call Security for an escort. You can use the Emergency blue light phones to call for an escort.

Report suspicious persons and behaviors. Be prepared to describe the person when you call security.

Don't let strangers follow you into the building, even if they "look like they belong there."

Report all crimes. You may not be the only victim.

Always lock cars. Do not leave money or other valuables in plain view.

If you have a harassing phone call, hang up. If these calls persist or you have been threatened, call the administration immediately. Keep a log of these calls by the date and time, description of voice, on or off school call, etc. Administration can trace these calls.

Do not loan out your calling card or TAC number to anyone.

Topics are highlighted at the time of year when problems can most likely occur. Each crime prevention topic may be the focus of printed materials, notices in publications and crime prevention seminars for a period of two weeks.

EMERGENCY DISASTER PROCEDURE

 Fire:

On the sounding of an alarm, all persons, except emergency personnel, are to evacuate the affected building by the nearest fire exit or stairwell. Elevators are not to be used. No one except Fire and Emergency personnel will be permitted to re-enter affected buildings until permission is granted by the Director of Health and Environmental Safety or Public Safety. Alert and direction will also be disseminated through the SSMS.

Bomb or Explosive Threat:

The decision to evacuate any building or buildings will be announced by Public Safety officials. If a building is not to be generally evacuated, the occupants will be notified of the threat and given the option of leaving.

If a building(s) is evacuated, all persons are to remain at least 300 ft. from the affected building or buildings. No one, except emergency personnel, is to re-enter an evacuated building without the permission the Public Safety official in charge.

Flood or Storm:

Any decision to close the university will be made by the Administration. Any such decision will be announced by established procedure using the SSMS to notify all registered persons. Should closing be necessary during the active school day, Public Safety personnel will make an announcement, and the SSMS alert notifications will be issued. Upon the closing of the school, all persons, except emergency personnel, are to leave or not report to school.

Power Failure:

In the event of a power failure, Public Safety will notify you if you are to evacuate or if the school is being closed. Emergency personnel will provide needed assistance.

Civil Disturbance or Riot:

In the event of a closing because of a civil disturbance or riot, emergency alert announcements will be made through the established Emergency Alert Information Portal procedures. Should closing be necessary during the active school day, Public Safety personnel will authorize an announcement and alerts will be disseminated through the SSMS with specific instruction, procedures to be followed, and actions to be taken. Once the school is closed, non-emergency personnel will not be permitted to return until the situation is declared under control.

Snowstorms:

If a snowstorm is of such severity that, in the judgment of those responsible, classes should not be held, announcements will be made through the Emergency Alert Notification Procedures of the SSMS.

The notifications will be disseminated to all registered participants to the digital device/s selected and registered.

If the building is not evacuated, faculty and office personnel should search their areas for any suspicious objects. Anything suspicious should be reported to Public Safety. Do Not Handle or Move Any Suspicious Objects.

The Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD) is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. The RAD System is a comprehensive course for females that begin with awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. RAD is not a martial arts program. Courses are taught by certified RAD instructors and provide a workbook - reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth.

Several times during the year surveys of vehicles are conducted in an attempt to identify those with valuables displayed that may be attractive to a thief. The owner of the vehicle is notified of its condition.
