Protecting Yourself and Your Property:
In Your Building:
Do not let strangers into the building, even if they say they are authorized.
If a stranger who looks "wrong" is in your building, contact the Building Administrator.
How to recognize "wrong":
The person is wandering around testing doors or windows.
The person abruptly stops or alters their direction of travel when they realize that you are watching them.
The person gives an excuse for their presence that doesn't make sense.
The person states that they are visiting a friend, but they don't know the friend's name or room number.
The person is waiting to be let in because they "lost their key," but they don't know the name of the building.
You work in the building but you have never seen this individual before.
The person appears to be hiding from someone or something.
The person picks up an item left by someone else.
The person is attempting to sell something, or solicit funds.
The person just doesn't appear to belong in the building, but you can't define why you feel that way.
Never loan your keys or I.D. card to anyone
Never prop open locked doors.
When Walking:
Do not walk alone at night.
Know where emergency telephones are along your route.
Pay attention to your surroundings. Walk briskly.
Have your key ready before getting to the door.
Visually check inside, around and under your car before getting in. Then lock all doors and roll up windows.
Your Property:
Prevent theft by reducing or removing the opportunity.
Lock your door and windows whenever you leave, even if it's "just for a minute."
Never prop open locked doors. *
Do not leave backpacks, purses, laptops or briefcases unattended, even in cubbies or carrels provided.
In offices, store purses or backpacks in a file cabinet or drawer and LOCK IT.
Record serial numbers and descriptions of your valuables.
Bicycles:
Use a U-shaped lock, not a cable lock.
Lock wheel and frame to the rack.
Immediately report suspicious persons around bike racks.
Motor Vehicles:
Always lock your vehicle.
At night, park in well-lighted, high-traffic areas.
Never leave valuable items visible in your car.
If you have valuable audio equipment, consider installing an alarm system or removing the equipment.
